As part of my Midwest Motorcycle Road Trip, I met my wife in La Crosse Wisconsin to visit her family. While there I took the opportunity to go on a 100-mile ride through the stunning Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. Having never been scraped flat by the last ice age, the landscape features a seemingly endless maze of twisty roads climbing hills and bluffs and descending into valleys with snakelike streams cutting bright green pastures into pieces. Dense forested hillsides greedily hide views while pristine hilltop farms generously share their sight lines into the distance. The county “alphabet” roads, so named for their letter designations, cover the terrain like a crazy net, capturing nearly every ascent and descent in it’s domain.

Words cannot alone describe this lovely region. Fortunately they do not have to as I had the camera rolling for much of this day. I encourage you to take a few moments and join me on the Alphabet Roads of the Driftless Area in the video below.

Driftless Wisconsin

Never touched by glaciers, the Driftless Area of Wisconsin is characterized by its beautifully sculpted topography. Forested hillsides reach down to valleys cut into limestone bedrock by cold-water trout streams. Forests, prairie remnants, wetlands, and grasslands provide habitat for wildflowers and wildlife.

The land is farmed by the descendants of those who first settled here, by the Amish who adopted the area, and by a new breed of organic farmer. Artists, who need look no further than their own backyard for inspiration, create works of infinite variety.

The great diversity of the Driftless Wisconsin area means something to suit the taste of every visitor. You can simply enjoy the peace and beauty of the countryside with a good book, a cup of coffee from a local roaster, or a glass of wine from a local vineyard. You can don your waders and hope to outwit a brook trout on a cool foggy morning. You can get on your bike and wind your way through magnificent scenery. You can shop for art, antiques, handmade furniture, artisanal cheeses, or locally-grown foods.
